Welcome back Spartans! We are excited to get the new year going this Wednesday. We'd like to welcome two new orchestra directors to the Seven Lakes team: Mrs. Gingell and Mr. Miller. If you are a returning student, make sure to introduce yourself and welcome them to the school. To read more about the orchestra directors, please visit the "Meet the Directors" page above.
Students who are new to orchestra: If you do not have an instrument rented yet, you need to rent one as soon as possible. Please visit the "Rental Info" page above for rental shop info so that we can begin using our instruments on the second day of class.
The new orchestra handbook is live! Please visit the "Documents" page above or visit Charms if you know your login. We will be passing out a signature page on Wednesday, as well as the Orchestra Fee sheet and other documents, so you may take a sneak peek at the handbook before signing.
We look forward to having another successful year in the Spartan Orchestras!

We will be having our next orchestra social event on Wednesday, December 14th at Main Event in Katy. This is an optional but fun opportunity to hang out with your fellow orchestra members! The cost is $20 and payment is due by this Friday, November 18th. Don't miss out on this great deal for food and fun with your orchestra friends!
Our spring trip for all non-FYO classes will be held on Saturday, May 6th. Students will be performing in San Antonio as part of the Alamo Showcase of Music Festival, and then will be spending the day at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. There are a limited number of spots available for this trip, so students are asked to submit the trip form and first payment as soon as possible, but no later than December 2nd. Turn in your payment early to reserve your spot!
If you did not receive the form from Mr. Whatley, a copy of the trip form can be found in the documents page on this website.
Our first concert for our performing orchestras is tomorrow, Wednesday October 26. Sinfonia, Philharmonic, and Chamber students need to arrive at 5:00, and Lyrica and Honors students need to arrive at 6:30 at Tompkins High School. Check out our previous post and Mr. Whatley's latest emails for more information.
Orchestra Picture day is this Friday! Students need to bring their formal uniforms and their instruments (violins and violas only) to school to be in this required picture. If you would like an individual photo taken in addition to our group photo, send a check with the picture order form that was given out during class.
October has begun, and that means that our first concerts for all our students are coming up. There are three separate concerts, below is the information for each and which students will be performing.
-All FYO (first year) students will be playing in their first concert on Thursday, October 20th at 6:00pm in the SLJH cafeteria. Students must arrive by 5:30pm to get set up and tuned. This will be a short concert where the students will demonstrate all the fundamentals of string playing that they have been working on using songs from their Essential Elements method book. The students have learned a lot in just two months and they are excited to show you what they can do so far!
--Honor and Chamber orchestra students who are participating in Full Orchestra will have their first concert on Thursday, October 20th as well. This concert will be held at the Seven Lakes High School Performing Arts Center at 7:30pm, students must arrive by 7:00pm. The orchestra students will be performing with the SLJH band students at the end of their concert, and they are excited to perform together as one ensemble for the first time.
-All performing orchestras (non-FYO) will have their first concerts on Wednesday, October 26th. This will be a combined concert with the orchestras of Woodcreek JH and Tays JH. Because of the vast number of students in all these programs, there will be two separate concerts: Philharmonic, Sinfonia, and Chamber orchestra students will be performing at 5:30pm (arrive by 5:00pm), and Lyrica and Honors orchestra students will be performing at 7:00pm (arrive by 6:30pm). Both concerts will be held at the Tompkins HS Performing Arts Center.
Spartans! Our first recorded Charms playing test is due this Thursday for all non-FYO classes. If you need instructions for accessing Charms, please click the "Charms" link at the top of this page. If you forgot how to record a playing test on Charms, there are written instructions available under the "Documents" page linked above. If you have any further questions, please contact one of the directors for more assistance.
Thank you students and parents for helping make the first week of orchestra a successful one! FYO students have already learned their first songs using pizzicato and have started working in Essential Elements book 1. Our performing orchestras began reviewing their scales and have started work on their first pieces for the upcoming Fall concert. All the students are very excited for the year and we are looking forward to a great year of learning in orchestra!
